FDA Sends Warning to E-Cigarette Distributors
December 12, 2010 – The FDA hit 5 different e-cigarette distributors with offenses ranging from unsubstantiated claims to illegal sales to minors last September.
The agency said that e-cigarette distributors falsely claim that electronic cigarettes will help people quit smoking. While many companies have advertised in this way in the past, most of the major companies are very strictly not doing so, calling the devices a “smoking alternative.”
The FDA noted that: “The device turns nicotine, which is highly addictive, into a vapor that is inhaled.”
“These products are not proven safe and effective yet,” Michael Levy, director of the division of new drugs and labeling compliance in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said at an afternoon press conference.
The FDA said in July that its tests had shown that some e-cigarettes contain cancer-causing chemicals and other toxins, including a compound used in antifreeze.
The agency even charged one of the companies with selling unapproved weight loss and erectile dysfunction drugs in the liquid from the cartridges. We haven’t seen THAT product yet. Pretty interesting
“There are FDA-approved smoking cessation aids on the market,” Levy said, for those who are looking to quit.
None of the companies recommended by this site were among those warned. They were E-CigaretteDirect LLC, Ruyan America Inc., Gamucci America (Smokey Bayou Inc.), E-Cig Technology Inc. and Johnson’s Creek Enterprises LLC.
