The arrival of E-cigarettes appears to have come right out of the proverbial blue. This is not, however, accurate. Designs for an E-cigarette date back many decades. It just took until recently for the concept to be perfected and commercially viable for the consumer market. The certainly was demand for the concept as many do like to smoke but they do not like to inhale carcinogens. Since an electronic cigarette contains water vapor, there is no smoke. And a recent electronic cigarette study showed there may be certain health benefits to using them. But, does an E-cigarette have the same amount of nicotine as a traditional cigarette?
There certainly different brands and manufacturers of traditional cigarettes. The blend of tobacco found in a cigarette will certainly differ as they do need to have a different taste in order to stand out from competitors. Yet, despite the differences, the amount of nicotine in the cigarettes will be the same: there is about 9mg of nicotine in a traditional cigarette.
With an E-cigarette, the nicotine levels will change depending upon the particular cartridge that has been selected. Cartridges can come with 24mg, 18mg, 12mg, 6mg, and as low a 4mg. Some may wonder why the cartridges will have varying degrees of nicotine. There are a few reasons for this. One reason is that some switch to E-cigarettes because they are trying to quit smoking. The nicotine cravings may be so strong that a higher level of nicotine in the cartridge will be needed. Over time, a decrease in nicotine can be slowly undertaken.
One thing that does need to be pointed out clearly here is that the volume of nicotine in an E-cigarette is per cartridge. One cartridge of an E-cigarette is the equivalent to 25 cigarettes. A pack of cigarettes contains 20 cigarettes. Again, the amount of nicotine per cigarette is about 9mg. Doing the math, a pack of cigarettes contains about 180mg of nicotine. That is far, far more than the nicotine “heavy” cartridges that contain 24mg. With 25 “cigarettes” in an E-cigarette cartridge, this comes out to less than 1mg per electronic cigarette. These averages of course vary, and you can get more specific information on individual electronic cigarette brands by looking at our e-cigarette reviews page.
So, it is pretty easy to see here that the electronic cigarette contains far less nicotine than a traditional cigarette. However, nicotine is present and that means a customer might “smoke” a great many E-cigarettes to acquire the nicotine. Of course, there is no smoke or tar in the equation and both smoke and tar are known for seriously damaging lung tissue.
This is not to say that E-cigarettes are safe. They appear safer but no one knows the long term effects of using E-cigarettes and only time will tell regarding the answer.
E-cigarettes do have less nicotine than traditional cigarettes but the electronic version does contain this addictive substance. As such, one needs to be mindful of such a fact when trying out the electronic version.
