Yarbrough, AZ Bans Sales of Electronic Cigarettes to Minors

February 26, 2011 – Interesting news about an Arizona state senator wants to make it a petty offense for both  merchants to sell electronic cigarettes to minors and for minors to buy them.

“If we’re going to say minors can’t buy regular cigarettes, it doesn’t seem valid to say they can have access to electronic cigarettes,” said Sen. Steve Yarbrough, R-Chandler. “Hopefully a few less young people will suffer nicotine addictions with this ban.”

This is one of the biggest problems in the electronic cigarette industry, because minors are still able to purchase electronic cigarettes under most state laws. While the best electronic cigarette companies will take every precaution to prevent this, it is a difficult task.

The bill at issue, SB 1280 was approved unofficially by Senate Committee of the Whole, setting up a final vote that would send it to the House. The penalty for a petty offense is a fine up to $300.

One of the reasons critics dislike electronic cigarettes is because of the many fruity – or candy – flavors they offer. And Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne echoed these concerns when he pushed for the ban and registered its support for the bill. His office noted that these devices could get kids addicted to Nicotine.
